Greenville Photographer | Spartanburg Photographer | Q&A with Kendra

Well today I am writing my first official Q&A with Kendra.  I have no particular order in which I’ll answer all the questions that I have, I guess it just depends on which one I’m in the mood to respond to when the time comes.  So today I’m answering:  What kind of photographer are you?

As a photographer I know that this question can be answered in so many different ways, but I will answer it as neatly & tiddy as possible :) (if that’s even possible).  I am a natural light wedding AND lifestyle photographer and I combine traditional portraiture with photojournalism to create images that tell a story.  Yep, that’s a mouthful but I really can’t make who I am as a photographer any smaller than that… and nor do I want to make it any smaller or simpler than that :).

I LOVE natural light, I love photographing in natural light… it’s dreamy, airy, and just “me” and who I am as a photographer.  If you do a session with me you will never see me pull out my flash (I say never, and as of right this second I mean never… I will say though that I am getting ready to take a class this year in off camera lighting so there may be times I change this up, but at this moment I can say never :) and more than likely off camera flash will just be added to weddings :)!!!!), I just don’t shoot portraits with flash, some photographers do and they do an amazing job, like crazy awesome amazing job… I’ve just found for me, I love shooting with whatever natural light is available.  The images I achieve with natural light are images I love so much and are images that I would want displayed all over my house :)!!!!  The one time you’ll see me pull my flash out is at a wedding and usually only during portraits in a church after the ceremony and the church has no natural light coming in AND/OR at a reception after the sun goes down or there’s just no natural light available.  So yes, I know how to use flash and do use flash but for the significant portion of my photography it’s natural light that I use to light my clients.  So to put it short and sweet.. I am a natural light photographer.

I say I am a wedding AND lifestyle photographer because I don’t just photograph weddings… I photograph seniors, families, kids, etc (however, I do not photograph pets :).. sure you can bring your pets along with you to a session but I’m not promising you I will ever get them to look right at me, and please don’t expect me to hold onto them and take your photos :) :)).  At some point I’ll touch on why I have chosen not to specialize, but the super simple reason is because I LOVE capturing LOVE & LIFE at all the different stages.  From the “I do’s”, to the expecting of a baby, to the newborn, to the kiddos, to the family, to the senior photo and then back to the “i do’s”… I LOVE every single bit of it and I love the opportunity to become friends with my clients and watch their families grow, and document that growth and that love.

Like I said a few paragraphs ago I combine traditional portraiture with photojournalism for both weddings and sessions.  Sure I’m going to give you some direction, but when you hire me, you are hiring me to photograph memories (and in my opinion that’s lots of fun & love).  I love capturing a family interacting with one another, kids just being kids, a bride when she looks in the mirror and realizes “this is really happening today”… I am all about capturing the essence behind whomever it is I am photographing in that moment of time!!  I love natural, real images, & I truly want to capture you and your family (you and your groom, your senior, etc..)  being “y’all”… whether that be smiles, laughs, cries, no smiles, not everyone looking at the camera, etc…  I really am just a huge fan of capturing someone as they are in that exact moment of time (I know I just repeated myself, but I feel it was worth repeating :) ).  With that being said I’m a mom, so I know you moms out there want “the perfect photo”… I will always do my absolute best to get everyone looking and smiling at me (even to the point of looking like a fool), but at the end of the day I’m going to capture you being you and from my own experience (my little girl decided from 3 months old and on (which is now 2.5 years old) that if it’s family photo time she will not smile :) ) those are still “the perfect photos”!!!  So yep I do a little bit of traditional portraiture & photojournalism when I get behind my camera.  For me, the mix of the two helps document whatever it is I am documenting and it allows me to capture both timeless, classic photos, as well as emotions and stories as they unfold.

Greenville Photographer | Spartanburg Photographer | Q&A with Kendra!!!

I’m at it again!!!  I’m starting something else that is new on the blog and I am soo soo excited!!!  I’ve been in business for the last 6 years and over these last 6 years I have been asked A LOT of different questions photography/business wise and a lot of times they end up being the same questions over and over… sooo I thought it would be a good idea to start answering questions (hopefully weekly… but if I don’t get to a question each week please don’t hate me) here on the blog… that way I have a place I can refer everyone to when/if the question pops up again & it gives people a chance to see the question & answer before they even have to ask it ;)!!  I know as a consumer I like to know the why’s and how’s and all the little details so my hope is that this new little part of the blog will be informative and beneficial to my clients and even other photographers (well that’s if any other photographers follow me ;) ).  Any question that I answer will be specifically answered based on my experience and my business (and my business only, there are lots of photographers out there and we all do things a little differently… and I love that because how boring would it be if we all did everything the exact same way!!! so please no haters if I do things different than someone else does… BUT if you just have to hate shoot me an email we can chat that way :) kendramartinphotography@gmail.com).  I spent a lot of time a few weeks ago remembering and brainstorming and I have written down as many questions as I can remember and y’all I can almost get to this time next year, but if you have a question for me photography wise please please please ask me and I’d love to put it on my list and answer it one of these days!!!!!

Y’all I am soo soo excited about this new little area of my blog.  Right now I’m being boring and calling it Q&A with Kendra… I’d love suggestions on a better name if you have them :)!!!  I’ve definitely seen others come up with some great names but I didn’t want to copy any of them so that’s why I just went boring :)!!!

And because I can’t blog without posting a photo I’m sharing this sweet photo of these sisters I photographed a few falls ago!!! Between the light, the girls, the rest of their sweet family (and not the mosquitoes that were killing us)… I LOVE LOVE LOVE this image from this session… and I had to share it again!!!  I’m really looking forward to being able to pull out images from past sessions when I do these blog posts… I love getting to relive sessions & fall in love with images over and over again!!!!!

Greenville Photographer | Spartanburg Photographer | 10 things about Kendra – February edition!!!

So this is totally new for me & I if you follow Katelyn James Photography you’ll know that I’m taking a spin off a blog post that Katelyn’s husband Michael posted last week called “10 things you didn’t know”.  As I was reading the blog post I kept thinking to myself that maybe with being new to South Carolina that I should totally do a few posts this year that let those here in SC, NC and Georgia (and those are the states I’m stating because I’m within in a hour drive from each so I can totally see myself shooting weddings or sessions in my bordering states) know a little more about me.  Yeah, you can probably go back through my blog history OR I can make it a little easier and do a few get to know Kendra posts :) :)!!!   So that’s where this post comes about… I don’t have any set plan on how often I’ll post these but I’m super excited about these blog posts!!!!  If you’ve read my about me page you may recognize a few things I blog about over time but my intent is to give you a little more insight into who I am!!!

1.  I purposely am saying that this is February edition of 10 things about Kendra because well… this is my birth month.  AND today just happens to be my birthday… and not just ANY birthday, but MY 30TH BIRTHDAY!!!!! I’m really not quite sure how I feel about turning 30 but I haven’t freaked out yet, so I’m guessing that’s a good sign!!!!

2.  If you haven’t guessed it yet, I’m Kendra!!!  :) I could stop there, but I won’t!! I was born and raised in the south (being Georgia & North Carolina).  I love so many things that are southern and totally claim the southern girl card!!  After getting married jobs took us to NOVA (northern Virgina for all of those who don’t live there), and then a year later took us to Texas (which yes is southern, but it’s Texas… Texas is it’s own thing and very rarely can you get sweet tea at a restaurant so it’s not “southern”… I think I’m okay in saying that Texas is Texas and yep I will stop there), and then 6 years later we made it back to the south and are now in the Upstate of South Carolina.

Kendra Martin Photography | Greenville Wedding PhotographerThis photo was taken by a resort photographer whom I’d love to give credit to, but he never gave us his information!!!

3.  You’ll notice that I said we!!!!  I am married to my high school sweetheart Gary.  We claim that we’ve dated since we were 14 & 15 (so yes this makes the 15th birthday I’ve spent with him) but we did date others at times so I can’t claim all 15.5 years but it’s pretty dang close & we got married and I love that I’ve known my husband since I was 14 years old!!!

4.  Gary & I welcomed our first “child” into our family in 2008.  She’s a black miniature schnauzer named Daisy and yes we were obsessed… and by obsessed I mean I treated this dog like a child.  yes, I still love her, but unfortunately a little girl won my heart over Daisy (who was demoted from child to dog in 2012).  Thank goodness she’s forgiving!!!

5.  We welcomed our sweet little girl Kenzie into the world in 2012.  You’ll occasionally see her & Gary make an appearance on the blog!!

BirthPhotosByPhotographyByJanine13A HUGE thank you to one of my dear dear friends Janine for these photos on Kenzie’s “Birth” day!!!

6.  Okay enough with the we’s…. let me see… Ohh I was a pole vaulter in high school and part of college.  You may wonder how one becomes a pole vaulter.  Well I remember my track coaching telling us we had to pick a field event to do and well this girl can jump so high jump was out, I wasn’t about to long jump or triple jump because that just didn’t look fun to me, throwing anything well just wasn’t my thing… so that left me with pole vaulting!!  LOVED it, still love it and soo wish I wouldn’t have gotten injured in college so I could maybe still do it!!!!!!

7.  I was a dancer.  From the time I was very little till middle school I danced, loved it, wanted nothing more than to be a dance teacher.  There were numerous reasons I left dance & yeah it makes me sad to know I didn’t get to go further, but I did get to do a lot of other sports and LOVED them (Softball, Basketball, XC, and Track… wouldn’t trade any of the experiences I had in any of those)!!  I will say I can’t wait to get Kenzie in dance class though.  It’ll be my luck that she doesn’t like it though!!

8.  Ohhh speaking of luck.  Say what you want about luck, but ask anyone who goes grocery shopping, out to eat, etc… with me how unlucky I am.  Y’all…. I don’t get it… I HAVE THE WORST LUCK EVER!!!!!!!  Just ask Gary, he’ll tell you!!!

9.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE music.  I love to play (it’s been a while but I can could play a few instruments… kicking myself in the butt for quitting band), listen, and sing (even though I really can’t sing)… BUT if I am in the car by myself you better believe I’m “LIVE IN CONCERT” :)!!!

usThank you to another dear friend Jamie for this photo.  It was taken right before we found out Gary got the job in SC… it’s our last photo session at our “home” (I say home, b/c Texas was very much that… maybe for another 10 things I’ll go into more detail!!)

10.  I think the most important thing to know about me (and if you’ve read my about me page you’ve read this but I’m repeating it because I think it deserves repeating)… is that I am a believer in Jesus Christ.  I love God, I want to know Him and serve Him better.  He has blessed me infinitely more than I will ever deserve!!!  Everything I do I try to do it to the best that I am able because I know He deserves my best!!  So yep, I love Jesus!!! :) :)

Ohh and I know this says 10 things about Kendra, but I’m throwing in an extra thing (don’t hate on me today… IT’S MY BIRTHDAY)… I LOVE !!!!!!!!! and :) :) :) !!!!!!!! and I make no excuses or any attempt to stop using them in letters, emails, etc…

Ohh gosh so I kind of feel silly after writing all of this, but I had fun with it and I hope you had fun reading it!!  Can’t wait to share more tidbits about me over the next couple months, year, etc… Like I said, I have no plan for this… I’m just doing it because I want y’all to get to know me a little more!!!  Hope you all are having a fabulous Monday!!!!!!!!!!!

-Kendra

So I warned y’all that I was going to be blogging another set of newborn photos from this sweet newborn session!! If you missed Monday’s blog post be sure to take a look, I think you’ll fall in love with little Mr. O just like I did!!! :) :)  I really don’t know where to begin with this blog post.  There are so many things I want to say to Jenn & Ben and their two little men… and I don’t know if it’s because I have so much that I want/could say… or if it is because I don’t want to screw up what I do say that makes me have no idea where to begin.  (If you just followed along with that rambling, well awesome… it was all over the place just like my thoughts).

To Jenn, Benn, little mr. C & O, I love you guys.  I love y’all and who you are as a family!!!  I love that we are now only  an 1.5 (well 2 hours since I found a way to get there that avoids the crazy highways) hours away, I love that our kids love each other and that’s with only spending a few hours with one another on a few separate occasions, I love that Jesus oozes out of y’all and who you are as a family!!!  I LOVE LOVE LOVE that I had the opportunity to photograph y’all as a family of 3, to now as a family of 4!! I love y’alls kindness and love.  I love y’all!!

Jenn & Ben, I love that over the last 5 years I’ve seen y’all go from the beginnings of dating (I still to this day can remember the excitement and squeals that Jenn had when it all began), to meeting Ben at Jenn’s PA school graduation, to him having to put up with “KENDRA & JENN”, to him secretly letting me know when he was going to pop the question, to Gary & I knowing it was going to happen and making vacation happen in Wilmington so we could be there a few days later to celebrate AND take their engagement photos, to the engagement, to the wedding where I had the privilege to stand beside Jenn & Ben as they said ” I do “, to Jenn & I realizing we were due within days of one another, to our firstborns, to now with their newest addition… to everything and anything that is between!!  Love you two and LOVE LOVE LOVE watching y’all be mommy & daddy!!!

Kendra Martin Photographer | Greenville Newborn Photographer | Spartanburg Newborn PhotographerKendra Martin Photographer | Greenville Newborn Photographer | Spartanburg Newborn PhotographerKendra Martin Photographer | Greenville Newborn Photographer | Spartanburg Newborn PhotographerKendra Martin Photographer | Greenville Newborn Photographer | Spartanburg Newborn PhotographerJenn, you are one of my dearest & best friends.  We’ve been through lots together in the last 11.5(ish) years… lots of good, some bad, some of everything in between (and shared a lot of clothes!!! yes random).  But I sit here and all I can think about is the good, and the friendship we have shared over the years, and I wouldn’t trade any bit of it.  We’ve done our adult years of growing up together (yes most of them like 1300 miles away from each other) & I am so glad because with that we’ve had the chance to stand with one another at graduations, engagements, wedding days, and now babies.  I am so proud of you and the woman that you are and so very thankful for you and your friendship!!! Kendra Martin Photographer | Greenville Newborn Photographer | Spartanburg Newborn PhotographerKendra Martin Photographer | Greenville Newborn Photographer | Spartanburg Newborn PhotographerKendra Martin Photographer | Greenville Newborn Photographer | Spartanburg Newborn PhotographerKendra Martin Photographer | Greenville Newborn Photographer | Spartanburg Newborn PhotographerOhh little mr. Kendra Martin Photographer | Greenville Newborn Photographer | Spartanburg Newborn PhotographerKendra Martin Photographer | Greenville Newborn Photographer | Spartanburg Newborn PhotographerOhh mr. My newborn sessions are lifestyle sessions and because of that I really need to be in your home photographing y’all be a family in your home… so if you’ve ever wondered if I’d be willing to head up y’alls way for a session… well now you know that I do & will (granted there may be a travel fee involved ;) but know that I am totally game for coming… just holler at me!!!).

Spartanburg Newborn Photographer | Greenville Newborn Photographer | LOVED starting 2015 out photographing this sweet little boy!!!

I photographed this family and their maternity/family photos back in the fall.  It was a session for the books (between the lighting, the fun we had, the images we walked away with, and little mr. C locking himself in their car… read the blog post if that just made you curious on how a 2 year old locks himself in the car) and I waited ever so patiently for Jenn to let me know when little mr. O would be making his apperance!!!  Jenn’s orginal due date was January 1st.  Then it got moved to like the 27th of December and then to like the 22nd or something like that and all those December dates came and went and I had a wedding show on the horizon and I just had a bad feeling that I wouldn’t get to be there for the birth unless he decided to come after the show but then that would be like January 4th and I never wanted to wish that on Jenn because she was ready in November to meet this little one… Needless to say Jenn let me know he’d be arriving on the 29th and between Kenzie being sick and the wedding show I knew for certain I wasn’t going to be able to make the trip to Charlotte to meet this sweet little one on his BIRTH day.  BUT I did get to meet him 12 days later and boy did I soak up every minute with him and his cuteness… Ohh and his sweet mom, dad, and big brother too ;)!!!

Jenn is one of dearest friends and when she told me she wanted me to take little Mr. O’s newborn photos I was so flattered and honored and just soo very excited!!!  And y’all this newborn session is one of my favorites I’ve photographed… maybe because this is a family I love so much and means so much to me but because y’all I walked away with some amazing images and I am soo soo in love with them and this little boy!!! Why oh why are we 1.5 hours away?!?!  Just take a sneak peek at those blue eye… he’s just yummy :) and as I type this I am wishing I was getting to hold this little one & see his sweet momma again soon!!!!!  Because Jenn wasn’t just a client but also a very dear friend (like we’ve been through lots of stuff together since we met my freshman year of college and this lady means soo soo much to me)… it meant that this wasn’t just a session, it was also me visiting and spending time with the 4 of them AND taking photos… well y’all I decided after taking a billion (maybe not that many, but it sure was a lot) photos that when I photograph dear friends newborn photos again or any kind of photos for that matter it will be all business and then spending time with my friends because good gravy I took WAY TOO MANY PHOTOS!!!! Which is no surprise because I tend to be snap happy, but good gravy I was more than snap happy and while it’s awesome for them and they get LOTS & LOTS of images… it means a tad more work on my end ;) but at the end of the day I wouldn’t trade any of it for the time spent with this sweet family and capturing this little man at this special time in his life!!!!!!

y’all little mr. O is a total sweetie and I LOVED LOVED LOVED getting to photograph him!! I LOVE that he was wide awake for the majority of his session and that he just wouldn’t take his pretty blue eyes off me!!!!  Love this little guy so much!!!!!!!!!!!!
