Greenville, SC Wedding Photographer | LIFE!!

I had EVERY intention of having blog posts ready to go for this week and then life just sort of had a way of keeping me from getting images ready & blogs written & I was sitting at dinner tonight (I guess it’ll be last night since you’re reading this on probably Monday!!) and panicked because “OHH NO, I HAVE THIS INCREDIBLE WEDDING AND SWEET GOING TO HAVE A BABY SESSION EDITED AND THEY AREN’T READY TO HIT THE BLOG!!!”  I know this is totally a first world problem but I am excited to share the wedding and session and I just let getting the blogs ready slip through my fingers… but as I’m sitting here writing this I find myself okay with that… you wanna know why?  Because I love life and I love everything that it’s made up of right this very minute and yes for my business, blog posts are important but the time I’ve spent with my family & in the word over the last week weigh more right this second… so yep I freaked out earlier but after sweet bedtime rituals with my little one, I’m once again reminded of what’s most important (and no I’m not saying my photography isn’t important, y’all know how much photography means to me and how much I love it… I just really really really love my time with God & my family & if I have to do a ranking system those two rank #1 & #2, followed by photography!!!  :) ).

I’m just going to say it… life is crazy right now… between moving to South Carolina, to starting a business in a new state, to running a business (please know if you get an email response back from me at a weird hour of the day/night/not during what should be normal business hours it’s because I have a little girl that pushes work to nap time & after she goes to sleep (and I love that I have to push work to certain times because I am soo soo soo soo lucky to spend my days loving and pouring into her)… I treasure my time with her and with Gary so even though I know I should probably hold “regular business hours”… I don’t/can’t/won’t for the foreseeable future because my time with them is well spent and I will work when she’s asleep), to being a stay at home mom, teaching Kenzie (yes, at the moment we are doing a home school preschool and she’s loving it and so am I!!!), to trying to stay active and healthy, Bible Study, Church, etc… etc… LIFE is crazy… but I wouldn’t change a thing about it.  If you’re reading this and wondering how I balance it all… I DON’T!!  I struggle to have a healthy balance with all these things because they are all so important to me… right now though the most important is my time with my savior & my family and so everything else gets done when it gets done and as quickly and efficiently as I can get it all done.  SO until there’s more hours in the day I will keep juggling all the many hats I tend to wear & loving on the little girl I that I am so blessed to call my daughter & capture memories & keep doing life!!!  Life is totally crazy but I LOVE IT!!!!!

Be on the lookout for this sweet session I photographed when I was back in Houston in August.  One of my friends found out she was pregnant earlier in the summer and when she found out I was opening up sessions the weekend I was back for a wedding, her and her hubby decided that they wanted to take photos that would announce the upcoming arrival of their little one!!  They have already shared the news, but I’m super excited about sharing all the images on here!!  Here’s a sneak peek from their session!!!

Casey - I love what you’ve written about family being number one – it’s so important and as a photographer we all know it’s easy to get wrapped up in ‘busy season’. I just moved cross country and am getting my business going in a new location, too, and it’s super hard! Don’t forget to take time for yourself and shoot just for you, as well. You’ll want the move and the change documented in years to come. Congrats on the relocation and great job staying ‘real’ and balanced! :)

Rachel - So sweet! What a cute pair of baby shoes! :)

Greenville, SC Wedding Photographer | I LOVE BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER!!!

I do, I really do love being a photographer.  I can honestly say that I’m one of those cheesy people that can say “I’ve had a camera in my hands since I was a little girl” and it be 100% true.  I’m not “old” but being able to say I grew up in the film era that transitioned to digital makes me feel old.  I have boxes and boxes of negatives, and instead of my images living on my computer like they do today I have albums upon albums of images that I snapped in my elementary, middle school & high school years….  I took pictures of ANYTHING & EVERYTHING (just ask any of my friends, they can vouch for that one)!!! Growing up I was the one that would always want to take a photo to remember what we were doing (with dance, band, church, etc, etc…), and my I should have just kept the camera in my book bag at times because I have some horribly bad images of myself and my friends being goofy!!!  But I love that I have all these thousands of physical photos to remember that time in my life!!

I can’t tell you when or why I first fell in love with photography but I can trace this love back to either my dad or the fact that we had family photos taken quite often (definitely Olan Mills family portraits…. but I have to give my mom props for documenting our family and doing it quite regularly).  I remember on family vacations watching my dad take his camera and going off and taking photos (I always wondered why he crouched a certain way or focused on one object or mountain and not the other, etc.. etc..) and I remember coming home from vacations and being excited when he’d show us the images once they were back from the lab.  My dad had a knack at capturing the places we visited so well and making you feel like you were back in that exact location… maybe his love of it made me love it.  Let me just say I AM NOT A SCENIC PHOTOGRAPHER & probably never will be… BUT I have been lots of places in the United Sates and have quite a few books that might say I love to photograph scenery, and it’s true (just still doesn’t make a photographer that does that in particular)… I just ove documenting this beautiful land God blessed us with… and I know without a shadow of a doubt that love of photographing this beautiful nation happened on a trip to the Grand Canyon the summer after 5th grade… I remember getting out of the car and walking out to the rim of the canyon and just being in complete awe and reverence of this majestic canyon… a canyon that God created.. for us to enjoy & I remember clicking away and thinking there’s no way these photos will ever do the real thing justice… but I have the pictures that now transport me back to my almost 6th grade self & for that I am so thankful.

So lots of rambling, but long story short… I love photography & being a photographer.  I love photographing love & life, I love the relationships photography brings me & the joy of clients when they see their images for the first time… and when that bride tells me “it was like reliving the day all over again”… that, that right there is probably the main reason I love being a photographer.  I am able to capture a moment, an hour, a day in time and then let those that I captured be able to relive those moments for the rest of their lives… photography is a passion and a love for me.  I know I’m not the most talented photographer out there and I know I’m not the most creative or innovative… but when I have my camera in front of me I know I’m doing what I love to do & God created me to do, and have loved to do for the majority of my life  & I know that I’m capturing moments that I can then share with others and bring them joy!! Yep… WITHOUT QUESTION I LOVE BEING A PHOTOGRAPHER!!!

and… Because I can’t post without a photo, I figured I’d share a few images my dear friend Emily snapped back in February at one of my engagement sessions.  She was in Texas visiting for the weekend and since I happened to have a session she tagged along & grabbed a few images of me doing what I love!! Thank you Emily for taking these & then sharing them with me!!! :) :) :) :)

I really don’t think I’m funny… like at all… but this photo may tell another story.  More than likely I said something just ridiculous or crazy and it just made them laugh, but ohh so happy I am that Emily captured this photo of this couple hopefully laughing we me :)!!!!

Kendra Martin Photography | Greenville, SC Wedding Photographer | Behind the ScenesI 5’5″ so more than likely I will always have this handy dandy step stool with me at a session to make sure I’m not ALWAYS looking up at someone :)!!

Spartanburg, SC Photographer | Family Photographer | Love this Sweet Family!!

I got so excited when I saw that Hillary wanted to do family photos… and then I read she wanted to do them in August and thought to myself “I won’t be in Texas anymore, I’ll be in South Carolina”… and then remembered “I HAVE A WEDDING IN AUGUST, I’LL BE BACK”.. so I quickly let her know when I was going to be available for a session the weekend I was back in town and the rest is history because met up on a HOT HOT HOT HOT HOT, Texas, Friday evening for family photos and it was delightful!!!  The girls were awesome and the light was amazing and I kept thinking to myself that I sure am going to miss this Texas light!!!

I definitely miss that light AND clients like Hillary & Jacob and their two precious girls!!  I have been photographing their family since their oldest was born and at each milestone it’s been both and honor and so much fun to be spending time with them again!!  This particular Friday evening was just amazing (minus the heat & humidity) and thinking back on the session makes me so excited for the friendships that I will prayerfully develop through photography here in Spartanburg.  Hillary & Jacob aren’t just clients, they are friends and their family means a lot to me.  Before we made the decision in 2012 for me to stay home with Kenzie & do photography full time I worked full time at a church.  Before I went on maternity leave it was a fact that I was going back to work and I had to find child care for Kenzie.  I knew Hillary had been using a lady for her oldest when she went back to work and I knew she had really liked her so I contacted Hillary to find out who it was, etc. etc… well long story short Hillary had decided a few months prior that that fall (she was a school teacher) she wouldn’t be heading back to teach… she was going to stay home and love on her eldest & maybe watch a handful of other kids if the right ones popped up… she let me know that she’d love to watch Kenzie when I went back to work… so for I think 6 or maybe 8 weeks (I can’t remember now how long it was before I made my change to stay at home mommy/full time photographer) Kenzie was loved on by this incredibly sweet family!! They were an answer to prayer and we were so blessed to have Hillary watch our sweet girl so early in her life… and for that I can’t thank her & Jacob enough!!!

Hillary & Jacob, I have LOVED getting to know your family over the last four (ahh has it been that long… CRAZY) years and I love documenting y’alls lives!!!  Thank y’all soo soo soo soo much for wanting me to photograph your family!!!  Know that I will be back :)… but if y’all are ever up here in Spartanburg visiting family yell at me!!!!

Greenville, SC Wedding Photographer | Kendra Martin Photography | Erin & Clay part II

I can’t even begin to describe how much fun it was to put together Clay & Erin’s blog posts (if you missed part I you should go take a look :) ).  I’m pretty sure they were the happiest two people on the planet that day and the entire day they just oozed happiness and I LOVED it!!!  Erin was nothing but smiles as she walked down the aisle towards Clay as he just took her in (she was stunning!!!).  After lots of smiles & some laughs during the ceremony which took place at River Oaks Baptist Church in Houston we made our way to the Petroleum Club.. which happens to sit on the 43rd floor of the Exon building (THE VIEW IS AMAZING!!!).  From the time they entered the room Erin & Clay just kept on smiling and celebrating alongside friends and family and it was a blast to sit back and document!!!

Erin & Clay, thank y’all soo soo much for wanting me to be part of your wedding day!! I loved documenting & spending the day with y’all & it was a fun way to say see you later to the good state of Texas!  I have so enjoyed getting to know the two of y’all over the last year!!! Thank you so much for letting me into your lives and for being so incredibly welcoming!!!!  Can’t wait to see what’s in store for y’all and your marriage!!!  If y’all are EVER in SC please yell at me because I’d love to say hello and give y’all a big SC welcome!!!!

Greenville, SC Wedding Photographer | Kendra Martin Photography | Erin & Clay

I remember when Erin called me!  I had been expecting her to call that Sunday afternoon but for some reason we still decided to head to HEB (grocery store in Texas) and get our weekly shopping done for the week.  We had just hopped in the car and I felt my phone start vibrating and I realized it was Erin and I freaked out because I wasn’t in my office and in my element with anything in front of me (I’m definitely one that likes to take photography phone calls in my office, with the doors shut, pen & paper in hand… so I can be sure I don’t miss anything or forget to tell someone something)… so I had 5 – 10 minutes before we got home… I kept thinking to myself that Erin probably thinks I’m avoiding talking about photography & she’d probably go a different direction.  Well we made it back to the house and I sprinted to my office (I totally left Gary with groceries and Kenzie to tend to :) ) and continued chatting all things wedding & wedding photography :) :) …. all that to say I still remember the first conversation I had with Erin and I remember thinking how I couldn’t wait to meet her.  I know it was just a phone call, but I could just tell that this woman was kind, caring, and sweet and that I was really going to like her!!

I first met Erin & Clay when I photographed their engagement session on a RIDICULOUSLY COLD, TEXAS, DECEMBER DAY!!!!!  I remember walking away from that session and thinking that I couldn’t wait till June to photograph their wedding day b/c they were so much fun!!  June 21st arrived SUPER QUICK… actually April-June for me is just a blur and especially the days leading up to Erin & Clay’s wedding day… I was helping pack our UHaul on the 19th & 20th and by 7am on the 22nd I was in the car moving to South Carolina!!  On the day of Erin & Clay’s wedding I was a whole bunch of emotions… excited, happy, sad, nervous… but the second I saw Erin walking down the courtyard at the church toward me and I saw her smile and saw how incredibly happy and excited she was… all of nerves/sadness just went away!!  Erin is one of those people that just makes you feel at ease and I can’t explain it but every time I’ve been around her she just makes me feel incredibly comfortable and like I’ve known her for years!!!  I have loved loved loved getting to know Erin & Clay since last fall & I couldn’t think of a more perfect bride & groom to have photographed during such a crazy time in my life!!  Erin, you are an amazing woman & it truly was an honor to document your wedding day!!  Speaking of wedding day… the whole day was AMAZING!!!!!!!  From the weather, to the dresses, to the guys suits & socks :), to the flowers, cakes, reception & all the dancing and fun, to the way y’all said goodbye… the whole evening was so beautiful!!!!  Erin & Clay, y’all were so incredibly sweet & welcoming and I sooo loved getting to celebrate y’alls day alongside your family & friends!!!!

Kendra Martin Photography | Greenville, SC Wedding PhotographerKendra Martin Photography | Greenville, SC Wedding PhotographerFrom the very first time we chatted about their wedding day Erin knew she & Clay wanted to do a first look!!!  I had ZERO objections because I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE first looks.  It’s an intimate time between the bride & groom.  In the years I’ve been photographing weddings I’ve realized that when there’s no first look and then the timeline is packed there’s usually not a lot… if any time for the bride & groom to spend time alone on this important day (their day!!!)… so with a first look they get that time… just the two of them.  I stand back just capturing it all & like with Erin & Clay’s getting a little teary eyed due to how happy they were to be getting married in a few short hours!!!  They were so excited to see one another & I loved getting to document it!!!!

Kendra Martin Photography | Greenville, SC Wedding PhotographerKendra Martin Photography | Greenville, SC Wedding PhotographerErin, I love your smile!! I love how incredibly happy you were ALL day long!!!!!

Kendra Martin Photography | Greenville, SC Wedding PhotographerKendra Martin Photography | Greenville, SC Wedding PhotographerKendra Martin Photography | Greenville, SC Wedding PhotographerBecause they did a first look we were able to spend a lot of time capturing photos of the two of them as well as their awesome wedding party!!!!
